These foods are the richest in prebiotics

Prebiotics are molecules that feed the good bacteria present in the intestine. “Their consumption therefore also contributes to gut microbiota health, and therefore to ours! Prebiotic molecules are particularly present in foods rich in fiber: fruits, vegetables, cereals,” explains Inserm.

If the consumption of prebiotics is important for health, it is still necessary to know where to find them. In a new study, scientists estimated the prebiotic content of 8,690 foods. So which ones contain the most prebiotics? According to this study, the foods that display the most prebiotic are dandelion leaves, Jerusalem artichokes, garlic, leeks and onions. Other foods rich in prebiotics include onion rings, onion cream, asparagus, etc. “Results from our preliminary literature review suggest that onions and related foods contain multiple forms of prebiotics, leading to higher total prebiotic content,” said Cassandra Boyd, a master’s student at San Jose State University.

Five grams of prebiotics

“The consumption of foods concentrated in prebiotics has been indicated by previous research to be beneficial to health”, recalls Cassandra Boyd. Before completing: “Eating in a way that promotes microbiome wellness while eating more fiber may be more achievable and accessible than you think.” These conclusions are unveiled at the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition to be held between July 22 and 25 in Boston, USA. Currently, the various medical organizations do not formulate precise directives concerning daily consumption of prebiotics. For its part, the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics recommends an intake of five grams per day. Based on the team’s findings, a person would need to consume about half a small onion to get five grams of prebiotics.
