B+ is the 3rd blood group in the world. 610 million people in the world have blood type B+, i.e. 9% of the world’s population. Only 7% of French people are group B positive. The characteristics of blood group B+ are:
► Antigens: red blood cells have type B antigens (proteins) so B+ people can give them to people with B and AB blood groups because their plasma does not contain the anti-B antibodies to destroy them.
► Rhesus: positive. Like any rhesus positive donor, red blood cells can be transfused to rhesus positive people; in this case, it concerns B+ and AB+.
► Antibodies: the plasma is concentrated in anti-A antibodies therefore it “accepts” red blood cells of type O and B all rhesus combined.
