Although these stem cell treatments are marketed as anti-aging products and solutions for hair loss, it is important to note that some customers who buy them may not be unaware that they might cause more damage than good, according to a leading scientist. Dr Darius Widera, associate professor of stem cell biology and regenerative medicine at the University of Reading, warned that customers are spending large sums of money on treatments that are not effective, even dangerous. The vast majority of proposed stem cell treatments are not not yet backed by solid research that supports their therapeutic use. According to Dr Widera, it is necessary to establish a strict regulation and control in this area.

Dr. Widera identified 114 companies in 28 countries charging up to £16,000 for exosome injections. Adult stem cells have been proven to be contributing to the regeneration of aging cellsbut it is possible touse the molecules produced by these cells, called exosomes, which have a similar effect, rather than injecting the stem cells directly. Exosomes are mainly composed offatty acids, proteins and a type of genetic material called microRNA, and they can slow the aging process by reducing inflammation. However, they have not yet been proven to have a visible anti-aging effect when applied to the skin.
