As varied as they are effective, essential oils are essential for health and well-being. However, they should be used with caution. Some useful storage tips to make the most of their benefits.
Properly stored, pure essential oils have a shelf life of 3 to 5 years. On the other hand, those which are diluted in vegetable oils must be used quickly, between 3 and 6 months after their opening.
This ensures that certain basic rules are followed to prevent essential oils from being dangerous or losing their effectiveness.
Once swallowed, certain essential oils (Ex: Oregano, Cinnamon, Thyme, Savory, Clove, etc.) can be as toxic as chemicals. They are certainly natural essences, but the plant molecules they contain are extremely powerful and concentrated, which can burn the mucous membranes.
Essential oils are sensitive to UV and infrared. They are therefore stored in a dark place: medicine cabinet, toiletry bag, etc. Similarly, if the oil is mixed (essential oil + vegetable oil), the product is kept in a cool place and away from light. .
Essential oils are volatile, they evaporate very quickly. They are therefore kept away from flames and any source of heat.
If we notice that an oil has changed in smell and/or texture, we throw it away immediately! No need to take unnecessary risks. If in doubt, seek advice from your aromatherapist, naturopath or pharmacist.
To note : Citrus essential oils have a shorter shelf life than others.
Tip: An oil that still smells good but is too old to be applied to the body can be an excellent home fragrance. Pour a few drops on a piece of clean wood and place it at the bottom of a closet or on a chest of drawers.
