Insect bite: what to do in case of blisters?

There blister more scientifically called “blister“corresponds to a lifting of the epidermis which forms a bulge filled with a clear liquid. It is a defense mechanism of the skin against an attack which causes a separation of the epidermis and the dermis. A small pocket of liquid forms between these two normally superimposed layers.

The blister can be the result of a burn, repeated rubbing, a contact allergy or even certain skin diseases. Sometimes it is secondary to an insect sting or bite. In the latter case, the blister is associated with:

• others local symptoms at the site of the sting (pain more or less intense, redness, itching sometimes strong swelling skin…) ;
• sometimes general manifestations of allergic or toxic origin (headache, digestive disorders, Rashes that itch…).

Several types of insect stings or bites can cause the appearance ofone or more blister(s). This is particularly the case of mosquitoes, bedbugs, spiders, bees, ticks but also dust mites or fleas.

It is often said that it is tiger mosquito which is most present in summer in France. The bite of this mosquito causes symptoms like itching and swelling, resembling a blister or blister.

Be careful, it happens that the mosquito bites trigger an allergy called Skeeter syndrome. This local inflammatory reaction is sometimes accompanied by fever, vomiting or difficulty breathing in the most serious cases.

THE spider bites often cause a blister that appears within hours. Other symptoms are often present at the site of the bite (or sting) such as sometimes sharp pain, redness, swelling and itching. Sometimes an ulcer forms in the days following the bite.

The severity depends on the type of venom (and therefore the species of spider) but also on its quantity. Some bites can lead to necrosis of the affected area or even more or less serious general and neurological signs. The malmignatte would be considered the most dangerous spider in France which can cause, for two days at most, pain on the bitten area, sweating and fatigue.

THE bed bug bites cause small flat red bumps that are sometimes intensely itchy. Sometimes blisters can appear in the days following the bite. Bed bug bites can also cause insomnia from excessive scratching.

THE tick bites are painless causing a small red lump on the bite area. However, sometimes the tick bite causes swelling, itching, blisters and bruising.

After one tick bite or sting, it is important to extract the tick(s) as quickly as possible. Indeed, if the tick carries the Borrelia bacterium, the risk of transmission of this bacterium, responsible for the Lyme diseaseincreases with the duration of the tick’s attachment to the skin.

A Bee sting, bumblebee, wasp or even hornet can cause blisters to appear within hours. But the first signs are most often sharp pain, rapid swelling, redness, warmth and itching.

THE flea bites may cause blistering.

THE mites can also sting sometimes causing blisters.

Many others insects may cause skin reactions such as blisters in the hours after the bite. We find in particular: the bites of ants, flies, horseflies…

If you have one or more blister(s) related to an insect bite, it is better to don’t pierce it. Unless it is large in diameter and very painful (in this case, you can pierce it with a sterile needle. Then disinfect with an antiseptic solution and cover the pierced blister with a bandage without removing the dead skin covering it).

In order to limit the risk of infection, disinfect the bite site after cleaning with soap and water delicately. You can use a antiseptic or simply alcohol vinegar. You can protect the blister with a bandage. A cold compress or an ice pack can help relieve pain and decrease swelling.

Remember: prevention is better than cure. In order to avoid the biting insectsavoid walking in the tall grass and give preference to closed shoes and long and covering clothes.

THE natural treatments can be very effective in relieving blistering insect bites. THE best remedies against insect bites causing blisters are:

• calendula oil : its healing properties make it a formidable ally against insect bites and blisters.
• Emu oil which has anti-inflammatory, anti-infectious, healing and analgesic properties.
• Apple cider vinegar : its anti-inflammatory and anti-infectious properties help relieve pain and disinfect blisters caused by insect bites.
• Aloe vera gel qui relieves pain and can inhibit inflammation.
• Witch hazel floral water which helps relieve skin inflammation and heal small wounds.
• Essential oils with anti-inflammatory and calming properties such as essential oil of plantain, lavender or tea tree. Please note that essential oils are contraindicated in pregnant and breastfeeding women and in children under 6 years old.
