Ibuprofen taken in high doses could lead to increased cardiovascular risks.
L’ibuprofenalso known by other names such as Advil®, Nurofen&, Spifen®, Spedifen®…is a widely used drug against pain and inflammation. Some forms are also available over-the-counter in pharmacies.
According to the European Medicines Agency (EMA), this product may slightly increase the risk of have a heart attack or stroke.
These risks only occur when the patients use it in high doses above 2400 mg per day.
On the other hand, no risk was observed in patients taking less than 1,200 mg per day, which is the case for the majority of users, since the usual daily dose is 200 to 400 mg 3 times a day.
According to the PRAC (pharmacovigilance risk assessment committee), the cardiovascular risk of ibuprofen would be similar to that of Voltaren, the use of which had been restricted in 2013.
The PRAC therefore recommends a modification of the advice for use concerning ibuprofen and invites doctors to “carefully” assess a patient’s cardiovascular risk before prescribing this product at high doses over a long period of time.
Note that these precautions for use do not apply to ibuprofen-based gels or creams.
