Definition: what is a hemorrhoid?

Hemorrhoids correspond to small blood vessels located in the anus and rectum. We are talking about hemorrhoidal disease when there is abnormal dilation of the veins. But in common parlance, we speak of hemorrhoids to talk about hemorrhoidal disease. Hemorrhoids cause a variety of symptoms like bleeding, pain or even prolapse (organ descent). Hemorrhoids can be of two types: internal or external.

Internal hemorrhoids may start bleeding when passing stools, which is almost always accompanied by itching and inflammation of the rectal area. They will also cause pain in the anus, particularly sharp during the hemorrhoidal crisis. They line the anal canal and have a purplish pad appearance.

External hemorrhoids correspond to the exteriorization of internal hemorrhoids, especially after defecation. This is called a prolapse. They are immediately outside the anus, only visible during complications.

What causes hemorrhoids?

The constipation. One of the first causes of hemorrhoidal crisis is the constipation, which encourages more effort during defecation. Furthermore, the sedentary lifestyle and lack of physical exercise can cause a loss of rectal tone and therefore promote the onset of symptoms.

Lack of fiber. Hemorrhoidal disorder can also find its origin in the content of your plate: a diet low in fiber (therefore promoting constipation) and very spicy can indeed cause it to appear. To limit the risk of hemorrhoids, it is therefore better to eat foods rich in fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables, etc.).

The pregnancy. Pregnant women are particularly affected by the phenomenon: hemorrhoids can occur during first months of pregnancy, but also following the push made during childbirth.

Certain factors can favor or aggravate the symptoms:

  • of the efforts made to evacuate a stool,
  • of the pprolonged sitting position on the toilet seat,
  • of the use of certain laxatives which aggravate the hemorrhoidal pathology;
  • an episode of diarrhea by irritative phenomenon;
  • there sedentary lifestyle ;
  • THE overweight and obesity;
  • the consumption ofalcohol and spicy dishes;
  • the practice of certain sports and certain activities which compel to lift heavy objects.

What to do in the event of a hemorrhoidal crisis?

A hemorrhoidal crisis is manifested by a abnormal dilation of the veins located around and inside the anus and rectum.

When to worry about hemorrhoids?

If all the symptoms listed above most often indicate a hemorrhoidal disease, they can also be indicative ofother diseases of the anus or intestine. That is why, at the slightest bleeding, it is recommended to consult a doctor. It can also intervene quickly in the event of external hemorrhoidal thrombosis. There hemorrhoidal thrombosis characterized by the formation of a clot in the hemorrhoidal tissues which will thus exert pressure and then induce swelling which will increase the pain. It is one of the most serious complications. This disorder results from the formation of a clot and results in the appearance of a very painful bluish swelling at the entrance to the anus; the doctor can then perform a small incision, under local anesthesia, to relieve the patient.

► The treatment of hemorrhoids comes down first to treat constipation who is at the origin, by adapting his diet and making sure to drink at least 1.5 liters of water a day.

corticosteroid ointments quickly relieve pain. A veinotonic drug may also be prescribed to stimulate venous circulation.

► Also make sure to do not force during defecation and to have regular bowel movements so as not to “harden” the feces.

Avoid sitting too long on the toilet seatas this causes relaxation of the rectal muscles and slows blood supply to the anal area.

► “In case of prolapseif it does not reintegrate spontaneously after defecation, it is advisable to push it back into the anal canal yourself with the tip of your finger, gently massaging with the prescribed ointment“, explains Doctor Richard Handschuh, general practitioner. “This allows the hemorrhoid to reintegrate the normal circulatory flow, then to deflate“, he adds. Finally, in case of more advanced hemorrhoidal disease, sclerosis of the hemorrhoids, or even surgical treatment can be considered.

What natural remedies to treat hemorrhoids?

The most suitable plants are horse chestnut and milk thistle to which we can add the red vine. Sometimes also the cypress, ginkgo and witch hazel can be used in mixtures dedicated to circulation.
