Diabetes: the importance of a healthy breakfast

As every year, November 14 will be celebrated as World Diabetes Day. The opportunity to recall the importance of a balanced breakfast to start the day in order to avoid late morning hypoglycaemia.

Healthy living to manage diabetes

As every year since 1991, the world diabetes day is celebrated on November 14.

For the period 2014-2016, the following theme has been chosen: Healthy living and diabetes “. Indeed, a balanced diet is part of the treatment of diabetes, as is the practice of a regular physical activity suitable for taking medication.

The organizers of this 2014 day emphasize the importance of start the day with a healthy breakfast.

An essential balanced breakfast

First of the 3 meals of the day, breakfast is essential, especially when you have diabetes. It allows you to rehydrate the body, to avoid cravings (and therefore the desire to snack) at the end of the morning but also to avoid the risk of hypoglycemia.

A balanced breakfast consists ofa beverage (tea, coffee, water, etc.), a grain product (bread, toast, low sugar cereals, etc.) for the energy provided by carbohydrates,one fruit (juice or compote without added sugar) anda dairypreferably semi-skimmed (milk, fromage blanc, yogurt, etc.).

Reserve croissants (or other pastries) for occasional occasions because they are fattier and sweeter.

Vary your breakfasts

To take more pleasure in breakfast, remember to vary your menus over the days, according to your tastes and habits.

Here are some examples of complete breakfasts:

  • Unsweetened coffee + 60 g buttered wholemeal bread + 1 yoghurt + 1 fruit
  • Unsweetened tea + 30 g of unsweetened wholegrain cereal with low-fat cottage cheese + 2 buttered rusks + 1 glass of fruit juice
  • Unsweetened coffee + 3 slices of wholemeal bread + 1 piece of cheese + 1 compote without added sugar
