A single hair can be dangerous for your baby

A single hair can be the cause of a major injury in an infant, as an American couple, parents of little Molly, learned.

Indeed, alerted by the cries of their daughter, they discover, by removing her socks, a very red, very swollen toe and very bruised: all this simply provoked by a his mama’s hair wrapped around that toe ! This unusual phenomenon is called tourniquet syndrome ” or ” strangler hair “.

To call for vigilance and alert other parents to this phenomenon, Jessica has since decided to post the photo of her daughter’s foot on Facebook.

Fortunately, a fairly rare phenomenon.

Strangler hair syndrome fortunately happens very rarely.

However, a team of emergency pediatricians from the Toulouse University Hospital wanted to study the cases of 57 children admitted to the emergency room between 2003 and 2009 following a tourniquet syndrome.

In the majority of cases, the toes were affected by this phenomenon (95%) but the doctors also found hair wrapped around the genitals. Fortunately, no cases of necrosis occurred and no amputations were necessary.

A hygiene problem

The study shows that “in 2/3 of the cases, the parents did not know how long the link had been in place”. This proportion may call out: how not to notice these lesions in your infant? This syndrome could therefore be linked to a lack of vigilance on the part of the parents.

In fact, doctors have noted that most cases of “strangle hair” occur in families where there are hygiene or precariousness problems: babies are not changed every day and parents do not attach their child’s hygiene and do not regularly check their baby’s toes.
